Former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to back Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity rather than issue threats that could endanger the nation’s unity.

Abdulsalami’s appeal follows Trump’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” over alleged persecution of Christians, a move the former leader described as potentially harmful to the country’s stability.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Abdulsalami cautioned that such comments from global leaders could “pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s hard-won unity” and undermine the progress made in fostering religious tolerance and national cohesion.

“Unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride at this critical moment,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to put aside political, ethnic, and religious differences and stand together in defending the nation’s sovereignty amid external pressure.

The former military ruler also emphasized the importance of engaging the U.S. government in constructive dialogue to address misconceptions and strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism and insecurity.

“Nigeria and the United States share long-standing ties. What we need now is strategic dialogue and partnership to resolve challenges, not statements that escalate tension,” Abdulsalami added.

His comments come as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes across various regions, with renewed calls for international collaboration in addressing the root causes of insecurity.
