Iran has expressed its willingness to support Nigeria in tackling terrorism and strengthening security cooperation between the two countries.
The Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja, said Tehran is ready to assist Abuja in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Raja noted that Iran stands prepared to share its experience and expertise in addressing security challenges if Nigeria requests such cooperation.
The envoy also addressed concerns about the relationship between Iran and some Islamic groups in Nigeria, clarifying that their ties with Tehran are largely spiritual and cultural rather than political.
According to him, the relationship is rooted in religious and cultural exchanges and should not be interpreted as political interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Raja emphasised that Iran respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and remains committed to maintaining cordial diplomatic relations with the country. He added that Tehran is interested in expanding cooperation with Nigeria in areas such as security, trade, and cultural exchange.
Nigeria has faced persistent security threats from terrorist and insurgent groups, particularly in the North-East, where the military has been battling extremists for over a decade. The ambassador’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to strengthen international partnerships in the fight against terrorism.
Analysts say deeper security cooperation between Nigeria and international partners could help improve intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism strategies in the region.
