A suspect arrested in connection with the shooting incident at a high-profile media gala in Washington, attended by Donald Trump, is expected to be arraigned in a U.S. federal court on Monday.
The incident occurred during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where gunfire erupted near a security checkpoint, triggering panic and forcing the evacuation of top government officials, journalists, and guests.
According to authorities, the suspect engaged in a brief exchange of gunfire with U.S. Secret Service agents before being subdued and taken into custody. He was not injured during the confrontation.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that the suspect will appear before a district judge and face federal charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Officials say the swift response of security operatives prevented what could have escalated into a more deadly attack. One Secret Service agent was reportedly struck during the exchange but was protected by a bulletproof vest.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack, with early indications suggesting the suspect may have targeted high-ranking government officials present at the event.
