LAGOS — The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has commenced an investigation into reports of alleged contamination of water supplied to some student hostels following health concerns raised by students on campus.

The development sparked anxiety among residents on Wednesday after several students, particularly in a female hall of residence, reportedly complained of symptoms including vomiting, stooling and general discomfort, raising fears that the hostel water supply may have been contaminated.

According to reports from the campus, affected students alleged that the water being supplied to some hostels had an unusual appearance and smell, prompting concerns about its safety for drinking and domestic use.

In response to the situation, the university management said it had begun investigations to ascertain the cause of the reported illnesses and determine whether there was any link to the water supply system.

Sources within the institution disclosed that relevant departments, including health and environmental officials, have been mobilised to collect samples for testing and assess the situation.

While the exact cause of the health complaints has yet to be established, university authorities assured students that the matter is being treated with urgency and that appropriate measures will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

The institution also urged students to remain calm and await the results of the ongoing assessment, while advising anyone experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at the university’s health facilities.

The probe comes amid growing concern among students and parents over the safety of water and sanitation facilities within the university’s halls of residence.

University officials are expected to provide further updates once investigations are concluded.
