ABUJA — Former presidential aide and Diplomat, Reno Omokri, has advised Nigerians to prioritise wealth creation over expensive fashion, arguing that financial discipline is more valuable than seeking social approval through luxury clothing and gadgets.
In a post shared on his social media platforms, Omokri said people should not feel pressured to constantly wear new outfits, noting that many of the world’s wealthiest individuals are known for repeatedly wearing similar clothes.
“If they ask you why you keep repeating your clothes, tell them it is because man invented soap,” he wrote.
He cited business leaders including Aliko Dangote, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos as examples of successful individuals who are often seen wearing similar outfits, urging people to channel their resources into investments rather than designer clothing.
“Don’t waste your capital on buying designer clothes. Instead, use your money to design your wealth,” Omokri said.
The author further argued that financially successful people are unlikely to ridicule anyone for managing their money wisely, adding that those who mock others for repeating clothes or using older smartphones are often trying to project an image they cannot afford.
“Rich people will never mock you for managing your money prudently. The only people who will make fun of you for wearing the same clothes are broke. The only folk who look down on you for using last year’s iPhone are struggling people trying to pass themselves off as happening people,” he stated.
Omokri concluded by encouraging people to stop spending money in pursuit of validation from others and instead focus on building long-term financial security.
His comments have sparked conversations on social media about personal finance, consumer culture and the importance of living within one’s means.
