The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, has declared an indefinite strike across the state following the reported death of a civil servant in the Ministry of Secondary Education.
The deceased, identified as Mr Unity Adedah, a Deputy Director in the ministry, was reported to have died on Friday morning after an alleged attack.
According to reports cited by protesting workers, Adedah was allegedly tied up and beaten by suspected thugs following an incident reportedly involving the state Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
The allegation has not been independently established, and the circumstances surrounding the civil servant’s death remain subject to investigation.
The NLC chairman in Delta State, Dr Goodluck Oforbruku, announced the indefinite strike while addressing aggrieved civil servants who gathered at the Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba to protest the circumstances surrounding Adedah’s death.
Oforbruku reportedly said the union could not remain silent over the death of a public servant under circumstances that workers consider deeply troubling.
The development has heightened tension among civil servants in the state, with the labour movement demanding answers and accountability over the incident.
The NLC is expected to provide further details on the scope of the industrial action and its demands as the situation develops.
Authorities are yet to publicly provide a full account of the circumstances leading to Adedah’s death.
