The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to uphold national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The minister described Nigeria’s diversity, human resources and natural wealth as key strengths of the nation, describing the country as “unarguably the most prosperous black nation in the world.”
He also described Nigeria as a beacon of hope under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that peace and stability remained essential to the country’s development.
According to the minister, Nigerians should draw inspiration from the nation’s founding fathers by demonstrating greater commitment to the country and working towards building a Nigeria that future generations would be proud of.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to implement measures aimed at improving the lives of citizens under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said the administration would “ensure a better Nigeria for all citizens, as a befitting tribute to our heroes past.”
The minister further urged Nigerians to use the anniversary to reflect the values of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He said a “new Nigeria is achievable,” adding that the Federal Government remained committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where citizens could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
