EKPOMA, Edo State — A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Mathew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died in a hotel in the town following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Jacob.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Details surrounding the lecturer’s death remained unclear at the time of filing this report, while reports alleging that he had been in the company of the 21-year-old commercial sex worker before his death have continued to generate reactions.

Tributes and comments have also continued to pour in on social media, with some commentators describing Uwuigbe as a respected academic and a man of integrity.

One commentator urged people who occupy positions of influence to remain vigilant against what he described as “challenges, intimidation and seduction from the wrong people,” while calling for justice in the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

Another mourner described Uwuigbe as “a great comrade” and “a man of unimpeachable integrity,” adding that he would be remembered as a scholar and a legend.

Other reactions, however, were more critical, with some commentators questioning the circumstances that allegedly led to the lecturer’s presence at the hotel.

One social media user described the incident as unfortunate and called for greater personal discipline, while another reflected on the vulnerability of people in positions of prominence.

The circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death, including the reported cause of death and the events leading up to it, could not be independently established from the information available.

Further details from the university, police or relevant authorities are expected to provide clarity on the incident.
