Former Chief Press Secretary to the late Delta State Governor, Sunny Ogefere, has paid an emotional tribute to his former boss, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, describing him as a compassionate leader whose kindness set him apart in Nigerian politics.
Ogefere expressed his grief following the death of Uduaghan, whose passing was announced by his family on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The former governor died on Monday morning at the age of 71, according to a statement issued on behalf of the family by Toju Anire Uduaghan. The family did not disclose the cause of death in its announcement, while media reports citing a family member said he died in a hospital in Abuja after a period of illness.
In a deeply personal tribute, Ogefere described the late governor as his benefactor and the man God used to lift him up, lamenting the loss of a leader who played a significant role in his life and career.
“Painfully and sadly, my benefactor has gone the way of all mortals,” Ogefere said.
He added: “My boss, Asamaigor, whom God Almighty used to lift me up, has gone to rest.”
Reflecting on Uduaghan’s personality and leadership style, the former Chief Press Secretary described him as a man whose gentleness and generosity were remarkable in Nigeria’s often tough political environment.
“Your Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan was too soft for a politician in our clime and kind to a fault,” he said.
Ogefere’s tribute highlighted the personal impact of the former governor’s generosity, portraying him not merely as a political leader but also as a benefactor whose support and kindness left a lasting impression on those who worked with him.
Uduaghan, a medical doctor by profession, served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007 before becoming governor in 2007. He governed the state for two consecutive terms, leaving office in 2015.
The late governor’s family described his death as an immeasurable loss to their household, the people of Delta State and Nigeria, while remembering him as a beloved father, brother, uncle and respected patriarch.
Ogefere also prayed for divine comfort and strength for Uduaghan’s wife, Her Excellency, Mrs. Roli Uduaghan, and the entire family as they mourn the former governor.
“May his humble soul rest in perfect peace. May the good Lord comfort and strengthen Her Excellency, Mrs. Roli Uduaghan and the entire family,” he said.
He concluded his tribute with an emotional farewell to his former principal:
“Adieu! Adieu!! Adieu!!!”
