Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described his recent closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan as both productive and forward-looking, noting that their discussions centered on Nigeria’s future and the urgent need for national renewal.
Obi, who visited Jonathan alongside a delegation of prominent South-East leaders on Monday, said the meeting was part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared on X, Obi explained that their conversation was candid and deeply reflective, focusing on how to move Nigeria toward unity, stability, security, and inclusive governance. He stressed that the country’s current challenges—ranging from economic hardship to rising insecurity and social divisions—make collaboration among leaders across regions more critical than ever.
According to him, Nigeria is at a point where leaders must set aside differences and work collectively in the interest of the people. He emphasized that the kind of leadership the nation needs should be rooted in competence, integrity, and compassion rather than personal ambition.
Obi further noted that governance should not be about distributing limited resources but about creating opportunities and building sustainable systems that benefit all citizens.
Looking ahead to 2027, he described the upcoming general elections as more than a routine political event, calling it a crucial moment to reset Nigeria’s trajectory and chart a new course for the nation.
