No fewer than 68 passengers escaped unhurt on Thursday after an Enugu Air aircraft overshot the runway while landing at Benin Airport in Edo State.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ENR, was operating on the Enugu–Benin–Lagos route when the incident occurred.

According to a source at the Benin Airport, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the aircraft veered off the runway after landing and came to a stop in a nearby bush.

“The aircraft overshot the runway and entered the nearby bush. Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) responded immediately and safely evacuated all the passengers. No casualty was recorded,” the source said.

Passengers and crew were successfully evacuated from the aircraft without injuries. However, the exact number of crew members on board could not be independently confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The cause of the runway excursion has yet to be determined, and aviation authorities are expected to commence an investigation into the incident.

As of press time, neither the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria nor other relevant aviation authorities had issued an official statement on the occurrence.

Further details are expected as investigations progress.
