The sermon “𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐦” focuses on the 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐢𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦.
The central theme draws heavily on the Biblical account of Lot’s escape from Sodom, 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭.
The message emphasises that while 𝐆𝐨𝐝’𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Furthermore, the message issues a strong call to action for believers, urging them to abandon spiritual idleness and lukewarmness in order to actively persuade others to flee the coming judgment.
1. 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐄𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Believers have a solemn responsibility to warn and actively reach out to everyone connected to them before judgment comes.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
Lot was commanded to bring out his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, servants, and whatsoever thou hast in the city because destruction was certain to come. The modern city is spiritually referred to as Sodom and Egypt.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞
Lot’s warning to his sons-in-law was brief and unconvincing, making him seem “as one that mocked”. The tone, seriousness, and conviction of the messenger are crucial, as a casual message of judgment is taken as a joke.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐦
Sodom was characterised by pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness, with no concern for the poor. The corruption of Sodom (immorality, wickedness, homosexuality, and self-will) is the state of society today.
2. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞
The mercy of God provides salvation, but it does not remove the responsibility to obey and act immediately. Lingerers risk being consumed in sin.
𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
The mercy of the Lord does not automatically solve everything; the sinner must still repent and walk rightly. When people persist in self-will and rebellion, God withdraws and gives them up to their own desires.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠
Lot’s hesitation to obey the angels’ command affected his family and nearly cost them their lives.
𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧
God’s instruction is clear: “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee… escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed”. True grace is the power to change and go in the right direction. Those who remain on the plain of compromise will be overtaken by judgment.
3. 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬
The process of escape requires purging all excuses, self-will, and reluctance that Lot exemplified.
𝐋𝐨𝐭’𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐎𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
Lot argued, “Oh, not so, my Lord,” insisting on his own choice (a small city, Zoar) instead of the mountain. True grace is not permission to linger or remain lukewarm.
𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐭’𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬
Believers must purge Lot’s weakness (staying where his soul was “vexed” by corruption), Lot’s wife (looking back after committing to God’s call), and Lot’s wine (anything that weakens moral strength and opens the door to sin).
𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡
Any wealth or possession that separates a person from spiritual fellowship or draws one into the lifestyle of Sodom must be rejected.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥
Repentance must begin with the believer before they can have the authority to call others to escape Sodom. The supreme goal in life is to reach out and evangelise, no matter the cost.
