The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce a new Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) for Nigerians abroad, marking the end of the current Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) system.
According to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the STEP initiative is designed to simplify and secure the process for Nigerians who urgently need to return home but do not possess valid travel documents.
The new system will provide a standardized, one-time travel passport, replacing the paper-based ETC currently issued by embassies and consulates. Officials say the digitalized STEP will enhance identity verification, reduce forgery, and streamline border control procedures.
The NIS added that the rollout of the Single Travel Emergency Passport aligns with the government’s broader goal of modernizing immigration services and improving the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
