The Senate has reaffirmed its support for the planned ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small-volume PET bottles, setting December 31, 2025 as the final deadline for enforcement.
During plenary on Thursday, lawmakers directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) not to grant any extension to manufacturers after the deadline expires.
The upper chamber said the move was necessary to protect public health and curb the growing abuse of cheap alcoholic products, particularly among young people and commercial drivers.
Lawmakers urged NAFDAC to intensify public awareness campaigns ahead of the ban to ensure producers and distributors comply fully before the deadline.
The directive comes amid ongoing debates between health advocates and industry players over the socioeconomic impact of phasing out sachet and small-bottle alcohol products across Nigeria.
