The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has successfully concluded its 2025 Press Week, themed “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification: Economic Implications and the Media’s Strategic Role.” The week-long activities climaxed with an engaging lecture series and the presentation of awards to distinguished personalities.

In his welcome address, the State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, expressed profound gratitude to God and warmly welcomed members to the annual event. He described the Press Week as not only a period of fellowship and reflection within the media community, but also a vital opportunity for meaningful engagement with society on issues central to governance, development, and democracy.

According to Oyowe, the theme of the event highlights the media’s responsibility to simplify and deepen public understanding of complex fiscal and monetary reforms, while ensuring institutions remain accountable for policies that affect citizens’ welfare.

He commended the administration of the Delta State Governor for its unwavering support for press freedom, infrastructure development, and inclusive governance under the M.O.R.E Agenda. The chairman reaffirmed the council’s commitment to balanced reportage and constructive discourse that strengthens democratic values and public trust.

Oyowe also hailed the resilience, dedication, and unity of journalists across the state despite the numerous challenges confronting the profession. He urged members to continually uphold their duty by deploying “the power of the pen and lens” to promote peace, development, and accountability in Delta State and Nigeria at large.

Declaring the event open, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, called for sustained collaboration between the government and the media in advancing the M.O.R.E Agenda. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to journalists’ welfare and professional development.

Governor Oborevwori was honoured with an award for Exceptional Fiscal Prudence, Inclusive Employment, and Good Governance, in recognition of his disciplined financial management, consistent support for workers’ welfare, and empowerment initiatives targeting women and youths.

Other notable award recipients included:

Mr. Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information – Outstanding Public Service Award for excellence in information management and infrastructure development, and for boosting public confidence in governance.
