The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has strongly condemned the reported assault on Juliet Enabulele Asein, a journalist with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), who was allegedly attacked and manhandled by Kelly Okungbowa (popularly known as Ebo Stone) during a public function in Benin City on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
The Council describes the incident as a direct assault on press freedom, a violation of the safety and dignity of journalists, and an attack on the constitutional right of media practitioners to perform their lawful duties without intimidation, harassment, or violence.
The NUJ warned that such acts of aggression against journalists will no longer be tolerated. The Union further appealed to members of the public—particularly public figures—to exercise restraint and demonstrate respect for the vital role the media plays in promoting democracy, transparency, and public accountability.
The Union therefore calls on the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to, without delay, arrest Kelly Okungbowa, conduct a thorough investigation, and ensure that he faces the full weight of the law.
