Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called for deeper collaboration between Edo State and Italy, describing cultural exchange as a strong platform for economic growth, mutual understanding, and sustainable development.

The governor made the call during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Abuja, Mr. Iacopo Foti, who was in the state following his participation in the recently held Edo Carnival in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo said Edo State is open to strategic partnerships with Italy, particularly in areas that will deliver mutual benefits, noting that sub-national cooperation remains a critical pathway to growth and global relevance

The governor said, “We are willing to welcome strategic collaborations between Edo State as a sub-national entity and Italy in areas that will benefit us mutually,”

“Edo State is rich in culture, history, creativity, and enterprise, and we believe partnerships built on these strengths will yield lasting dividends.”

The visit also provided an opportunity for broader stakeholder engagement across the three senatorial districts as Mr. Foti met with key state officials, including the commissioner of police, Monday Agbonika, deputy chairman of the All Progressive congress, Sylvester Aigbobor, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; House of Representatives Majority Leader, Hon Julius Ihonvbere; Peter Black Omoh Dunia, CEO of Ocean Wave Group; the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, among other key stakeholders in Edo South, Central and North.

Earlier, the Italian Deputy Head of Mission expressed deep admiration for Edo State, describing his journey as one filled with anticipation and excitement. He added that through his interactions with the people, he realized that Edo is peaceful and the people are optimistic of a better future, a situation he described as the direct opposite of the story that is told about the state outside the state.

He said he had heard much about Edo’s rich history, dynamic culture, and strong entrepreneurial spirit before arriving in Benin City, adding that his experience confirmed why the state is proudly referred to as the “Heartbeat of Nigeria.”

According to him, the Edo Carnival represents a genuine showcase of the people’s cultural heritage and traditions, which define their unique and vibrant identity within Nigeria.

Drawing parallels between both societies, Mr. Foti noted that Italy, like Edo State, places great value on preserving history while embracing modernity.

He said, “Italy is a nation with a rich cultural heritage, from the Renaissance art of Florence to our historic streets through time. Our traditions remind us of the importance of honoring the past while looking forward to vision and determination,”

“In Edo State, I see a similar spirit, a proud people who honor their past and confidently shape their future.”

Mr. Foti also commended Governor Okpebholo for his administration’s efforts in strengthening security across Edo State, noting that a safe environment is essential for tourism, investment, and sustained development.

He further highlighted the strong and growing relationship between Italy and Nigeria, anchored on mutual respect and understanding.

He cited expanding economic ties, increasing cultural exchanges, a shared passion for football, and the rising number of Nigerians studying and visiting Italy as students and tourists. He also acknowledged the growing number of Italians drawn to Nigeria’s rich culture and history, many of whom now consider the country a second home.

According to him, both countries share common strengths beyond official reports and statistics, including deep historical heritage, the importance of small and medium-scale enterprises as economic drivers, thriving movie industries, and a strong sense of aesthetics reflected in their globally admired fashion industries.

Governor Okpebholo said these shared values and interests provide a solid foundation for enhanced cooperation between Edo State and Italy, assuring the Italian delegation of the state’s readiness to engage meaningfully in cultural, economic, and creative-sector partnerships.
