The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally requested the Chief Judge of the state to investigate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct, marking a major step in the ongoing impeachment process.
The resolution was adopted during plenary on Friday, following a motion moved by lawmakers in line with the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to the Assembly, 25 members voted in favour of referring the allegations against the governor and his deputy to the Chief Judge for further action.
The move empowers the Chief Judge to constitute a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations and report its findings to the House, as required by law.
Friday’s decision represents a significant escalation in the political crisis rocking the state, as the House continues to pursue constitutional procedures in its dealings with the executive arm of government.
