The Edo State Government has demolished a building in the Amagba area linked to suspected cult members following recent killings in the state.
The property was reportedly used as a hideout by members of the Aye confraternity, where two suspects were arrested while five others escaped during a security operation. The demolition was carried out by the Special Security Squad, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers in Edo State,” under the leadership of the Principal Security Officer to the Governor.
Addressing journalists after the exercise, the Squad’s Spokesperson, Mr. Eribo Enwanta, said the state’s anti-cultism law would be fully enforced to rid Edo of cult-related violence.
According to him, the Governor has given a clear mandate to restore law and order. He emphasized that no individual is above the law and confirmed that suspects who fled the scene—including those identified as Koko, Enas, and Sparol—remain wanted and will be apprehended to face prosecution.
Mr. Enwanta also provided updates on certain Okiagheles earlier directed to report to the Special Squad. He disclosed that two out of the three individuals had complied and are currently undergoing profiling. However, he warned that the seven-day ultimatum issued to the Okiaghele of Obagie, Ken Dada, is still in effect.
He cautioned that failure to honour the invitation within the stipulated period would result in further legal action, including possible declaration as a wanted person. He reiterated that the state government remains committed to upholding the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the Special Security Squad has sealed off a residence in the Upper Uwa area of Benin City, described as the last known address of Etiosa Akhiombare Joshua, also known as Baba Josh. He is alleged to be a member of the Maphite Confraternity and is accused of masterminding and financing last week’s killing at Wire Road.
Mr. Enwanta revealed that intelligence reports indicate the suspect has relocated to Canada. Consequently, the Edo State Government has involved Interpol to track and facilitate his return to Nigeria to face justice.
He further stated that all properties linked to the suspect will remain sealed pending his appearance before authorities. The spokesperson alleged that the suspect placed a ₦1 million bounty on the victim and provided funds for the weapons used in the attack.
The government reaffirmed its resolve to intensify the crackdown on cultism and violent crimes across the state, stressing that anyone found complicit in unlawful killings will be pursued and prosecuted.
The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo reiterated its commitment to ensuring that cult-related violence becomes a thing of the past in Edo State through coordinated security efforts and strict enforcement of the law.
