CBN Approves JPMorgan’s Entry into Nigeria’s Merchant Banking Sector

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has granted global financial giant JPMorgan approval-in-principle to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria, marking a significant development in the country’s financial services industry.

The proposed institution, to be known as JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, will be required to obtain a final banking licence from the CBN before commencing operations.

In a statement issued on Friday, the apex bank confirmed the approval-in-principle, which represents an initial regulatory step towards the establishment of the proposed merchant bank.

The development could strengthen JPMorgan’s presence in Nigeria’s financial sector and potentially expand access to specialised banking services for businesses and institutional clients, subject to the bank’s final licensing and operational arrangements.

Merchant banks typically provide corporate and institutional financial services, including corporate finance advisory, capital-raising support, investment-related services and other specialised financial solutions, depending on their regulatory permissions.

However, the approval-in-principle does not authorise the proposed bank to commence operations. JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited must first satisfy the CBN’s requirements and secure a final banking licence.

Further details regarding the proposed bank’s launch timeline, management structure, capital base and scope of operations are expected to emerge as the licensing process progresses.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
