The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi as a profound loss to Rivers State and Nigeria, paying glowing tribute to the late lawmaker as “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even in difficult times.”

Senator Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, died in London last Thursday at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

Wike spoke in London on Thursday when he led a delegation of Rivers State political leaders on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased. The visit was to Senator Mpigi’s wife, Mrs. Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children.

In a statement issued by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said the late senator was a strong pillar in the politics of Rivers State and a steadfast friend.

“We are here as a delegation sent by the leader of Rivers State,” Wike said. “Your husband was a strong pillar in the politics of Rivers State. When he said he was your friend, he was your friend. He stood with his friends through thick and thin.”

The Minister noted that although death is inevitable, the timing of Senator Mpigi’s passing was painful, especially at a period when his contributions were still greatly needed.

“It is very unfortunate that this is the period we really need your husband to be around. But we can’t question God,” he added, praying for strength for the family and all who mourn the late senator.

Wike assured the family that the Rivers State leadership would stand firmly with them and ensure that the late lawmaker receives a befitting burial.

“We will play our own part. We will not forget Bari. It is our loss, and we will be there with you to ensure he is accorded a befitting burial,” he said.

The FCT Minister was accompanied by his sons, Jordan and Joaquin; Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh and Olaka Nwogu; Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Aaron Chukwuemeka; as well as Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere and Hon. Dum Deekor.

Responding on behalf of the family, Mrs. Patricia Mpigi expressed appreciation to the Minister and the delegation for their support.

“I thank you for your presence and support. All I can say is thank you. Thank you for all you have done,” she said.

The condolence visit underscores the deep political and personal ties the late senator maintained within Rivers State and beyond.
