The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have strongly rejected the newly signed Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, warning that certain provisions in the law pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, NNPP National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, addressed the media on behalf of opposition parties, expressing their collective dissatisfaction with the amendment.
Ahmed described the revised Electoral Act as an attempt to undermine multi-party democracy and alleged that it could pave the way for a one-party state if allowed to stand.
He stated that opposition parties are prepared to explore all constitutional and legal avenues to resist the implementation of the amended law.
“We demand that the National Assembly immediately commence a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act 2026 to expunge all obnoxious provisions and ensure the Act truly reflects the will and aspirations of Nigerians for a free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process in our country. Nothing short of this will be acceptable to Nigerians,” he said.
The opposition parties insisted that any electoral reform must strengthen democratic institutions and promote inclusive political participation rather than restrict it.
More details are expected as reactions continue to trail the controversial amendment.
