Suspected kidnappers on Sunday attacked a commercial bus travelling from Lagos to the eastern region of the country, killing the driver and abducting an unspecified number of passengers.
According to reports, the assailants opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing it to stop before seizing the occupants. A viral video circulating online showed the aftermath of the incident with a narrator claiming that the gunmen shot the driver dead and led several passengers into the bush.
“The kidnappers shot and killed the driver. They also took passengers into the bush. I don’t know the exact number, but it appears the entire bus was taken,” the narrator said.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the attack occurred within the jurisdiction of the Iguobazuwa Police Division.
She disclosed that a manhunt had been launched for the perpetrators, adding that the Commissioner of Police had directed nearby divisions to intensify bush-combing operations to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.
Ikoedem also assured the public that security measures were being strengthened to enhance safety along the affected highway.
