The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Seyi Makinde of making statements capable of inciting violence, following remarks he delivered at an opposition parties’ summit in Ibadan on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the governor’s reference to the historic “Operation Wetie,” describing it as reckless and a potential threat to peace and national security.
The ruling party argued that it was inappropriate for a sitting governor, who also serves as the chief security officer of his state, to invoke a period associated with political violence. According to the APC, such remarks could inflame tensions and undermine national stability.
The party called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to protect lives and property, while safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic system.
The APC further stated that constitutional immunity does not absolve public officials of accountability for statements or actions that could threaten national security, adding that no individual should endanger public safety under the guise of political commentary.
Responding to claims about Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state, the party dismissed such assertions as unfounded. It argued that opposition parties are grappling with internal challenges, including leadership disputes, factional divisions, and what it described as weak adherence to democratic principles.
The statement also criticised key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, alleging that their actions contributed to instability within their respective parties.
Reaffirming its position, the APC maintained that Nigeria’s political environment remains pluralistic, noting that multiple parties are actively participating in the democratic process.
The party added that it remains focused on preparing for the 2027 general elections and will not be drawn into managing the internal affairs of opposition parties.
It also reiterated its commitment under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and implementing its policy agenda.
