Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has paid glowing tribute to centenarian Mrs. Esther Ahon as she marked her 100th birthday, describing her as a symbol of calmness, kindness, discipline, and exemplary motherhood.
The governor, represented by the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, spoke at a thanksgiving service held on Saturday at Bishop Agori-Iwe Memorial Anglican Church in Ovwodavwaren, Ughelli.
He noted that the celebrant’s life, defined by dignity, humility, and strong moral values, serves as a powerful inspiration to both present and future generations.
Oborevwori emphasized that Mrs. Ahon, mother of his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon is being honoured not only for reaching the remarkable milestone of 100 years, but also for the enduring values she represents. He highlighted her unwavering commitment to family, her success in raising responsible children, and her positive contributions to society.
The governor further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of senior citizens, stressing that they remain highly valued members of society.
Reflecting on the meaning of honour, he remarked that beyond political titles, the most revered recognition is that of “Okpakorere”—a respected community elder—describing it as a distinction bestowed by divine grace rather than personal ambition.
In his sermon, Venerable Oghomena Diakeleho-Edjere described the centenarian as a devoted and God-fearing woman whose commitment to the church has been steadfast and exemplary. He praised her punctuality, consistency, and active involvement in church activities, referring to her as a “living legend” worthy of celebration during her lifetime.
He also offered prayers for her continued strength and grace, encouraging others to emulate her life of faith, service, and devotion.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Moses Ahon expressed deep gratitude to God for the rare milestone, noting that Mrs. Ahon is the first in the family to attain the age of 100. He described the occasion as a moment of immense pride and joy for both the family and the wider community.
He also appreciated the presence of dignitaries, including government officials, traditional rulers, and captains of industry, who came to honour the celebrant.
The centenary celebration featured a solemn thanksgiving service, heartfelt prayers, and glowing tributes to a life widely regarded as impactful and worthy of emulation. The event concluded with a colourful reception, where Mrs. Ahon, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and well-wishers, ceremonially cut her birthday cake in a joyful climax to the celebration.
