Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has assured the family of late Independent Television and Radio (ITV) reporter and Government House Correspondent, Kingsley Uchegbu, of the state government’s support following his death.

The governor gave the assurance during a condolence visit to the residence of the deceased in Benin City through a delegation led by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Yakubu Musa.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said the Edo State Government would not abandon the family but would provide the necessary assistance to help them cope with the loss of their breadwinner.

“Madam, we are here on the directive of the governor to assure you that you are not alone in this difficult time. The government will be part of the process that will bring succour to you and your children,” Afegbua said.

He described the late journalist as a committed, humble, and dedicated professional whose lifestyle and work ethic earned him admiration among colleagues and associates.

“We are consoled by the fact that nobody here can speak ill of Kingsley. He was dedicated, committed, humble, and lived a simple life. The distance he travelled daily to work reflected his resilience and devotion to duty,” he added.

Afegbua also encouraged the widow, Mrs. Chineyeamara Uchegbu, to remain strong for the sake of her children.

Responding on behalf of the family, a church elder from Winners Chapel, Dr. Magnus Oshiogwe, appreciated the Edo State Government for the prompt condolence visit, describing it as a mark of honour and respect for the late journalist.

“We appreciate the governor and his team for this visit. Whatever support the government can provide for this family will go a long way in easing their pains,” Oshiogwe said.

He noted that Uchegbu was an active and devoted member of the church, adding that the news of his death had been deeply emotional for both family members and church associates.

Kingsley Uchegbu died on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, after a brief illness. Until his death, he was a staff member of Independent Television and Radio attached to the Government House Press Corps.

He is survived by his wife, children, and aged mother.

Members of the delegation included the Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Ken Ihensenkhien; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua; Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele; Special Adviser on Electronic Media, Paul Ezenwa; and members of the Government House Press Corps.
