The decision by the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, Hon. Bright Abeke, to ban the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, has continued to generate reactions from residents of the area.

While some residents described the move as a step in the right direction, many others strongly criticised the decision, arguing that it would worsen the hardship already being experienced by the people due to the country’s economic challenges.

Some residents who spoke with The Romanews appealed to the council chairman to reconsider the ban, insisting that many families depend on motorcycles for transportation and daily livelihood.

One resident condemned the decision, saying the government should seek solutions to challenges associated with Okada operations instead of imposing an outright ban.

Another respondent described the policy as insensitive, noting that many residents living in interior communities rely heavily on motorcycles to take their children to school and commute to work.

“He should reconsider his decision. People are already suffering too much,” another resident stated.

A concerned parent lamented that her children had to trek home from school following the enforcement of the ban, adding that one of her daughters developed a severe headache as a result of the stress.

Several residents also questioned whether the local government had made adequate alternative transportation arrangements before implementing the restriction.

“What plans are on ground to cushion the effects of this ban? The chairman should consider the hardship and difficulties this decision has brought on the people,” a resident queried.

Another inhabitant expressed disappointment over the development, recalling the public support and prayers offered for the chairman during his kidnapping ordeal weeks ago.

“This is somebody we all prayed for when he was kidnapped, only for him to return and inflict suffering on the people,” the resident said.

Despite the criticism, some residents believe the ban could help address security concerns and reduce accidents often associated with commercial motorcycle operations in the locality.

However, many residents are calling on the Sapele Local Government Chairman to review the decision and introduce measures that would ease transportation difficulties for the people.
