One of the most influential couples in modern Nigerian history was Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and his first wife, Simbiat Atinuke Abiola.
Born on 5 February 1938 in Abeokuta, Simbiat Abiola came from the prominent Soaga family. She met MKO Abiola while they were young and the two eventually married in October 1961. Despite initial opposition from her family due to MKO’s modest background at the time, their relationship endured and became one of the most significant partnerships in Nigerian business and political history.
Far more than a political spouse, Simbiat was an accomplished entrepreneur and administrator. She held leadership positions in several companies within the Abiola business empire, including the Concord Group of Newspapers and other commercial ventures. She was also known for her support of sports development and women’s empowerment.
MKO Abiola rose to become one of Nigeria’s most successful businessmen and later emerged as the presumed winner of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest election in Nigeria’s history.
However, the election was annulled by the military government, leading to a political crisis that reshaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Sadly, Simbiat Abiola died on 10 November 1992, months before her husband’s historic presidential victory. She was the mother of five of his children, including Kola Abiola.
Today, Simbiat Abiola is remembered not only as MKO Abiola’s wife but also as a successful businesswoman, philanthropist, and one of the women who helped build the foundation of one of Nigeria’s most influential families.
