An official of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), identified as Subaru Donald, and a commercial minibus driver were involved in a violent altercation in Benin City following an alleged traffic violation.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday in the Edo State capital, reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation after EDSTMA officials attempted to apprehend the driver for an alleged colour code violation.
According to reports, the driver initially evaded arrest, leading to a chase by traffic officials. The pursuit ended when the vehicle became stuck, enabling the officials to apprehend him.
During the ensuing struggle, the driver allegedly sustained an injury to his back after being bitten in the course of the altercation. His identity had not been confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
In a video circulating on social media, Subaru Donald claimed that the driver endangered his life after he was flagged down by EDSTMA operatives.
Donald alleged that the driver refused to stop and instead drove off with him still inside the vehicle.
“He held me hostage in his vehicle and his colleagues kept asking him to stop, but he refused,” Donald said.
He further claimed that a struggle broke out between them and that the driver attempted to attack him with a large stone.
“We started struggling with each other. Suddenly, he brought out a big stone and wanted to hit me on the head,” he alleged.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while details surrounding the confrontation remain unclear.
