‘2027 Could Be My Last Presidential Race,’ Peter Obi Hints, Backs Younger Leadership

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has suggested that the 2027 general election may be his final attempt to contest for Nigeria’s highest political office.

Obi made the remark during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, where he reflected on age, leadership, and the need to create opportunities for younger Nigerians.

Asked whether 2027 would be his last presidential bid, the former Anambra State governor said the decision would ultimately depend on the outcome of the election.

“It depends on who wins,” Obi said.

“But I can tell you, I’m coming to the end of it because I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”

The former governor noted that advancing age would make it increasingly difficult to meet the physical and mental demands of the presidency.

“I’ll be 68 or 69. So, if you add that to another eight years, I will be 77 or 78. I don’t think I’ll have the energy I have today because that capacity is very important. It’s critical,” he said.

Obi reiterated his belief that Nigeria should begin giving younger leaders greater opportunities to take up key leadership positions, adding that the 2027 election could mark the end of his presidential ambitions.

Obi was the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general election alongside Atiku Abubakar. He later contested the 2023 presidential election as the Labour Party’s candidate before emerging as the presidential flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

His latest comments are expected to fuel discussions about succession, generational leadership, and the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
