The family of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his assassination with a memorial ceremony in Umuahia, Abia State.
The event, scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, 2026, will take place at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Tomb Site and will feature a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the late military leader.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Aguiyi-Ironsi’s son, Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, said the memorial offers an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the life, leadership, and sacrifices of his father, whose contributions to national unity and development continue to resonate.
«”The anniversary provides an opportunity for the nation to honour the memory, leadership, and sacrifices of a distinguished Nigerian patriot whose contributions to national unity and development remain enduring,” the statement read in part.»
Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, a former Minister of State for Defence and former Minister of Defence, also announced that a memorial Mass will be held in honour of his late mother, Lady Victoria Nwanyibuife Aguiyi-Ironsi, on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
According to the statement, the Mass is scheduled to take place at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other prominent Nigerians are expected to attend the commemorative events.
Lady Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi passed away on August 23, 2021, at the age of 97 at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. She was born on November 21, 1923.
Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi was born on March 3, 1924, and became Nigeria’s first Military Head of State after the January 15, 1966 coup. He assumed office amid political uncertainty but was assassinated on July 29, 1966, during the July counter-coup, bringing his brief administration to an abrupt end.
Six decades after his death, his family says the annual remembrance remains a tribute to his legacy and a call for Nigerians to reflect on the ideals of unity, patriotism, and national service that he sought to uphold.
