Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on governments, development partners, healthcare professionals and families to strengthen their commitment to promoting and protecting breastfeeding as a vital foundation for healthier children and sustainable national development.
In a message to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7, the First Lady reaffirmed her support for global efforts aimed at advancing healthy breastfeeding practices among mothers.
This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” highlights the importance of sustaining policies and support systems that enable mothers to exclusively breastfeed and provide optimal nutrition for their children.
Mrs. Tinubu noted that breastfeeding lays the foundation for a child’s healthy growth, cognitive development and lifelong well-being, describing it as a critical investment in families, communities and the nation’s future.
She also encouraged mothers to adopt healthy lifestyles and maintain balanced, nutritious diets to support their own well-being and ensure the healthy growth and development of their babies.
The First Lady emphasized that collective action is essential to creating an environment where every mother receives the support she needs to breastfeed successfully, thereby giving every child the best possible start in life.
