BENIN CITY — The dismissal of five police officers by the Edo State Police Command over alleged criminal activities has sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians, with many describing the move as a strong message against misconduct in the Nigeria Police Force.
The officers were dismissed after the command announced disciplinary action against them, declaring that “the era of impunity is over” and reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and zero tolerance for criminal conduct within its ranks.
Following the announcement, social media users expressed divergent opinions on the development. While many applauded the command for taking decisive action, others argued that dismissal alone may not be sufficient punishment for officers found guilty of criminal offences.
Some commenters welcomed the decision, saying it would serve as a deterrent to other officers engaging in misconduct. One user wrote, “This is a good decision, it will send warning to other criminals in police uniform,” while another remarked, “That is good, they really deserve it.”
Others, however, questioned whether dismissing the officers without prosecution adequately addressed the alleged crimes. A commenter stated, “If they are being dismissed on the ground for criminal acts, I hope they will be charged to court,” while another argued that prison terms would better protect the public, saying, “I will prefer prison terms than dismissal because a dismissed police officer is a threat to the general public.”
Some Nigerians also raised concerns that dismissed officers could still use the skills acquired during their years of service for criminal activities. One respondent suggested that demotion should be considered before dismissal, noting that removing officers from the police payroll does not erase the training they received.
The development also reignited debates over accountability within the police hierarchy, with some questioning why disciplinary measures often appear to affect junior officers. One commenter asked, “Why are they always dismissing officers from inspector downward? Don’t senior officers commit crimes too?”
Others expressed sympathy for the dismissed officers, urging authorities to consider the impact of the decision on their families. “Please let’s forgive them; they are fathers and our brothers trying to provide for their families,” one social media user wrote.
The Edo State Police Command has maintained that it remains committed to sanitising the force and ensuring that officers who violate the law or professional ethics are held accountable.
The dismissal has continued to generate conversations online, with many Nigerians calling for consistent disciplinary action across all ranks of the police and insisting that officers accused of criminal offences should face prosecution where necessary.
