A Nigerian lawyer, Barrister Obasi Nzubechi, has urged couples and intending spouses to combine love with financial prudence, citing reports about football star Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner, Georgina Rodríguez.
Obasi, in a post on his official Facebook page, said reports that Ronaldo and Rodríguez married under a separation-of-financial-assets arrangement offered an important lesson on protecting individual financial interests within marriage.
According to him, such an arrangement generally allows each spouse to retain ownership and control of assets acquired separately, rather than automatically treating all property as jointly owned in the event of a divorce.
He noted that reports had suggested the idea of separating their financial assets came from Rodríguez, whom he described as someone who simply wants to love Ronaldo without being primarily concerned about his wealth.
“Love with your heart. Build with your brain. Protect what you worked for. Set boundaries and understand the law,” Obasi said.
The lawyer stressed that financial independence and legal safeguards should not be interpreted as a lack of trust or commitment in a relationship.
He argued that couples could love each other deeply while still taking steps to protect their individual financial futures.
“A smart person doesn’t expect a marriage to fail; they simply refuse to be financially destroyed if it does,” he stated.
Obasi’s comments have drawn attention to the importance of prenuptial agreements, separation of assets and other legal arrangements that can help couples understand their financial rights and obligations before and during marriage.
He urged people to approach marriage with both emotional commitment and financial awareness, stressing that love and prudent financial planning can coexist.
