The deteriorating condition of the Benin–Agbor Road has continued to generate concern among motorists, commuters and other road users, with calls mounting on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the critical highway.

The road, which serves as an important link between Edo and Delta states and connects travellers to several parts of the country, has reportedly become increasingly difficult to navigate, raising fears of worsening traffic congestion, vehicle breakdowns and prolonged travel times, particularly as the festive season approaches.

Reacting to the situation, some road users expressed concern over what they described as the sudden deterioration of the highway.

“Imagine how December time go be like,” one commentator said, expressing fears about the likely condition of the road during the Christmas travel period.

Another called for alternative routes to be completed or opened to ease pressure on the existing road network, saying, “The coastal highway and the Western corridor should be opened to ease the flow of traffic.”

Some commentators, however, defended the Federal Government’s ongoing road projects, particularly the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, urging motorists to be patient while rehabilitation and construction projects are undertaken.

“Coastal highway is being built, relax, we’re fixing it,” one commenter wrote.

Others questioned the apparent deterioration of the Benin–Agbor route, asking, “What happened? Did a motor fall on the highway? Why the sudden shock?”

The condition of the road has also triggered wider concerns about the state of federal highways linking Edo State to neighbouring states and major cities.

“Benin–Agbor, Benin–Warri, Benin–Asaba, Benin–Lagos, Benin–Abuja, Benin–Benin. All the linking roads to Edo State are in bad shape,” another commentator said.

There were also concerns about the impact of the poor road condition on security, with some road users warning that deteriorating highways could expose motorists to greater risks.

A number of commenters also questioned the prioritisation of major infrastructure projects, arguing that existing strategic highways should be repaired and maintained alongside the construction of new roads.

One commentator described the Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba route as “strategic and of great importance,” and urged the authorities to prioritise its rehabilitation to reduce the hardship faced by road users.

“Common sense. The Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba is strategic and of great importance. It should be a priority to at least ease the sufferings of its users,” the commenter stated.

Political reactions also featured prominently in the online discussions, with some users questioning the performance of elected representatives and the government’s handling of road infrastructure in Edo State.

Others compared the condition of roads in Edo with those in neighbouring states, while some criticised politicians for allegedly becoming more visible during election periods.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, has continued to emphasise ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and expand major road infrastructure across the country as part of the Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda.

However, the growing public concern over the Benin–Agbor Road underscores the need for urgent attention to the route, particularly ahead of increased traffic expected during the end-of-year festive period.

For motorists and businesses that depend on the highway for the movement of people and goods, stakeholders are calling for immediate repairs and effective traffic management to prevent further deterioration and reduce the hardship currently being experienced by road users.
