A historic photograph showing former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, arriving in Uyo in a Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman has resurfaced, offering a glimpse into the political symbolism surrounding the creation of Akwa Ibom State in 1987.

The photograph captures Babangida during a state visit to Uyo shortly after his military administration created Akwa Ibom State out of the former Cross River State.

Akwa Ibom State was created on September 23, 1987, becoming Nigeria’s 21st state at the time. The creation followed longstanding demands for greater political and administrative autonomy by minority ethnic groups in the area, including the Ibibio, Annang and Oron.

The visit to Uyo therefore carried considerable political significance, coming at a time when the new state was establishing its administrative identity and institutions.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman

In the photograph, Babangida is seen arriving in a Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, one of the most prestigious luxury vehicles associated with heads of state and royalty during the 20th century.

According to Mercedes-Benz historical records, the Mercedes-Benz 600 was produced from 1963 to 1981 and became renowned for its engineering, comfort and sophisticated hydraulic systems.

The Pullman versions, including long-wheelbase and limousine configurations, were particularly associated with political leaders, senior government officials and other prominent personalities.

Its imposing appearance and luxurious interior made the vehicle more than a means of transportation—it became a visible symbol of authority and prestige.

The model’s association with heads of state around the world helped reinforce the ceremonial character of official movements during the era.

A New State, A Historic Visit

Babangida’s 1987 visit came only days after the formal creation of Akwa Ibom State.

The new state was carved out of Cross River State by the Babangida administration following years of agitation for separate political and administrative recognition.

Uyo was designated as the state capital, providing the administrative centre from which the new government would begin building the institutions of the state.

Archival accounts identify Uyo as the location of Babangida’s reception during the visit. Some accounts have associated major civic receptions of the period with prominent public grounds in the city, although the precise location depicted in the photograph would require confirmation from the original archival record.

IBB and the Politics of Image

Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, was widely regarded as a leader who paid considerable attention to political presentation and symbolism.

Known by the initials “IBB” and popularly nicknamed “Maradona” because of his political manoeuvring, Babangida’s era was marked by major political and administrative changes, including the creation of new states and local government areas.

The photograph therefore offers more than a record of a presidential-style arrival. It captures the intersection of political power, state creation and the ceremonial culture of Nigeria’s military era.

The sight of the military ruler stepping out of an imposing Mercedes-Benz Pullman in the newly created state would have carried considerable symbolic weight, projecting the authority of the federal government and the importance attached to the birth of the new state.

Akwa Ibom’s Journey Since 1987

Nearly four decades after its creation, Akwa Ibom has grown into one of Nigeria’s prominent states in the South-South region, with a strong presence in the country’s oil and gas economy as well as a distinct cultural identity.

The creation of the state remains one of the notable administrative decisions of the Babangida era and a defining moment in the political history of the region.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman featured in photographs from that era is itself regarded as a significant classic automobile, reflecting the luxury and political grandeur associated with official state vehicles of the 20th century.

The photograph, attributed to archival collections including the National Archives of Nigeria, consequently preserves two stories in one frame: the birth of a new Nigerian state and the ceremonial symbolism of political power in the Babangida era.
