Chief Thomas Jacku Sokoh (1911–1995), fondly celebrated by his praise name “Orejevwa”meaning The Unbeatable, was one of the most remarkable figures in Urhobo history. A pioneering businessman, visionary real estate magnate, legendary philanthropist, and community builder, he played an instrumental role in shaping the modern Udu Kingdom in present-day Delta State, Nigeria. As one of the renowned “The “Udu Big Three”: He was part of an influential trio of leaders—alongside Chief Wilson T. Odibo and Chief Jefia K. Notoma—who significantly accelerated the political, economic, and infrastructural growth of the Udu Kingdom. his entrepreneurial brilliance, unwavering generosity, and exceptional leadership transformed the economic and social landscape of the Niger Delta throughout the twentieth century.

Born in 1911 during a period of profound change in colonial Nigeria, Chief Sokoh displayed an extraordinary gift for business from an early age. At a time when indigenous entrepreneurs faced immense barriers under colonial rule, he defied the odds and built a thriving commercial empire through determination, foresight, and hard work.

He emerged as one of the earliest and most successful indigenous real estate developers and business leaders in Urhoboland. While foreign companies dominated major commercial ventures, Chief Sokoh established an impressive portfolio of properties and thriving enterprises across Warri and the wider Niger Delta, laying the foundation for indigenous economic empowerment. Furthermore , He served as the first President of the Warri Main Market Traders Association and played a major role in the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU). He contributed to vital regional projects like the Udu Bridge and received traditional honors from the Ovie of Okpe Kingdom and the Oba of Benin in 1972 and He helped conceptualize and establish Ovwian Grammar School to foster educational development for local youth.

Chief Sokoh’s legacy is inseparable from the development of the Udu Kingdom. Together with his close associates, Chief Wilson T. Odibo and Chief Jefia K. Notoma, he formed the legendary trio famously remembered as the “Udu Big Three.” Their collective vision and leadership accelerated the kingdom’s political, economic, and infrastructural development.

One of his most enduring contributions came during the campaign to fund the construction of the historic Udu Bridge, a landmark project that connected communities, expanded commerce, and transformed transportation across the region. According to the celebrated Urhobo musician Chief Ogute in his famous Udu Bridge song, Orejevwa demonstrated unparalleled generosity by offering what was essentially a blank cheque, asking the Udu leadership to write in whatever amount was required to complete the bridge. The remarkable gesture cemented his reputation as a man whose commitment to his people knew no limits.

Beyond his achievements in commerce and infrastructure, Chief Sokoh was a visionary institution builder. He established and strengthened several traders’ associations throughout Warri, bringing structure, organization, and unity to local commerce while championing the interests of indigenous entrepreneurs. As a respected leader within the historic Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), he devoted himself to promoting peace, unity, and the preservation of Urhobo culture and identity.

Recognizing that education was the foundation of lasting progress, he also served on the committee that helped conceptualize and establish Ovwian Grammar School, creating educational opportunities that would benefit generations of young Nigerians.

His immense contributions to commerce, community development, and philanthropy earned him widespread recognition. He was first honoured with a distinguished chieftaincy title by the Ovie of Okpe Kingdom. Later, in 1972, his influence extended far beyond Delta State when the revered Oba of Benin bestowed another prestigious title upon him in recognition of his outstanding contributions to commerce and societal advancement across the region.

Despite his enormous success, Chief Sokoh remained deeply rooted in family and tradition. He lived a disciplined and dignified life, raising a large family with seven wives and thirteen children. He was remembered as a devoted father whose firm discipline was matched by genuine love, generosity, and an unwavering sense of responsibility to both his family and his community.

Chief Thomas Jacku Sokoh joined his ancestors peacefully in 1995 at the age of 84. Yet his legacy continues to inspire generations. His life stands as a testament to resilience, visionary leadership, entrepreneurial excellence, and selfless service. In the annals of Urhobo history, Orejevwa remains a towering symbol of greatness, a king without a crown who devoted his wealth, influence, and life to building his people and strengthening a kingdom.
