Former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama has celebrated the 100th birthday of civil rights activist and educator Opal Lee, praising her decades-long leadership and contribution to the recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday.

In a birthday tribute, Obama described Lee as an “iconic” figure whose lifelong work has helped uplift Black communities and preserve African American history.

“Wishing a very happy 100th birthday to the iconic Opal Lee!” Obama wrote.

She added that the United States owes Lee “a deep debt of gratitude” for her leadership and dedication, particularly her role in the campaign to have Juneteenth recognised as a national holiday.

Obama also expressed her appreciation for having the opportunity to celebrate Lee’s milestone birthday in person.

“It was such a privilege to get to celebrate with you today,” she said.

Lee, widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” has spent decades advocating for national recognition of June 19, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Her activism gained national attention through her efforts to raise awareness about Juneteenth and campaign for its recognition as a federal holiday. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation officially establishing Juneteenth National Independence Day as a U.S. federal holiday.

Obama’s tribute highlights Lee’s enduring influence on America’s conversations about racial justice, history and equality as she marks a century of life and service.
