Former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has warned against attempts to manipulate elections, declaring that any effort to rig the polls would be met with resistance on the ground.
Omo-Agege issued the warning while speaking at a rally of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State, where he cautioned that electoral fraud could jeopardise the future of Nigerians, particularly the younger generation.
He described election rigging as an act that goes beyond the immediate political contest, arguing that it could undermine the prospects of future generations.
“If you don’t value your life, come and rig election. Because if you allow them to rig, they will be rigging your future. They are rigging the future of your children,” he said.
The former senator also issued a stern warning to anyone contemplating electoral manipulation, declaring that those responsible should be prepared to face resistance.
“We are waiting for them. Let them try it. They will rig and die,” Omo-Agege said.
He further used the expression “aura for aura” to describe what he portrayed as a forceful response to any attempt to compromise the electoral process.
Omo-Agege also dismissed the suggestion that those challenging electoral outcomes should rely solely on the courts, referencing the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“They thought it’s under Buhari, they say go to court. There is no court this time. We are going to fight on the ground there,” he declared.
His remarks underscore the tensions surrounding electoral integrity and political competition in Delta State, although the specific election being referenced was not immediately clear from the available account.
The comments also raise concerns about the potential for political confrontations, as stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of credible elections and peaceful participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
