The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, has accepted full responsibility for the recent derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Opeifa said while investigations into the incident are ongoing, the matter will not be swept aside.
“Beyond apologising to Nigerians, I want to state clearly that as managing director and chief executive, I take full responsibility. In safety matters, there is no indifference — the chief executive must take responsibility, and I am doing that,” he said.

Opeifa confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the accident, which he described as a “near miss,” but however, disclosed that four passengers sustained serious injuries, while two others were treated and discharged immediately.

The Managing Director added that the NRC would continue to monitor the condition of those still receiving treatment, as well as provide follow-up support for the 618 passengers on board, given the possible post-traumatic impact of the derailment.

“We would in the meantime continue to monitor and follow up those who are still receiving treatment towards ensuring that adequate provisions are given to them “.
