Tragedy struck in the ancient city of Benin City, Edo State, Thursday at a public function at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, off Airport Road when the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gbenga Agun reportedly slumped and confirmed dead at the hospital.

It was gathered that the late commandant died barely five months after he lost his mother, Deaconess Grace Busola Agun in April 2025, at the age of 85 years.

Agun was said to have slumped shortly after delivering his goodwill message at the event organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), where he was one of the awardees.

After failed attempts to resuscitate him, he was rushed to the nearby Military Base Hospital, along Airport Road where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The deceased Commandant assumed duty in Edo in January 2024. When he visited the then governor, Godwin Obaseki, he bemoaned the spate of cult-related activities and vandalism in the state and pledged to partner with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful state.

According to him, “I am posted to the state as the new NSCDC State Commandant to work with you to make the state peaceful and move forward. I am here to work for Edo people in total loyalty to your administration and ensure you deliver on your promises to Edo people.”

Also at a courtesy call on the Oba of Benin, Ewuare 11 early March 2024, Agun said he was in the state to chase out vandals, declare war against vandalism of critical national assets, as well as secure the lives and property of citizens.

He was truly a dedicated and gallant officer who had a mind to work.
