A Tragic Surgery Abroad: How Medical Negligence Led to the Death of Stella Obasanjo

In October 2005, what was meant to be a routine cosmetic procedure in Spain ended in tragedy for Nigeria’s First Lady, Stella Obasanjo — a loss that would later result in a criminal conviction and global scrutiny.

Stella Obasanjo, wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, died on October 23, 2005, following complications from an elective liposuction surgery performed at the Molding Clinic in Marbella, Spain. The procedure was carried out by Spanish plastic surgeon Dr. Antonio Mena.

According to court findings later made public, the surgery went disastrously wrong. During the procedure, Dr. Mena mistakenly inserted a cannula — a tube used for fat extraction — into Mrs. Obasanjo’s abdominal cavity. The error punctured her colon and lacerated her liver, causing severe internal injuries that triggered life-threatening complications.

The aftermath of the surgery further compounded the situation. A Spanish court established that Dr. Mena was not immediately reachable after the operation, as he had switched off his mobile phone. When Mrs. Obasanjo’s condition deteriorated, there was a delay in transferring her to an intensive care unit.

Instead of arranging for emergency ambulance services, the doctor transported her in his private vehicle to another medical facility — a decision the court determined contributed to the delay in critical care.

Four years later, on September 22, 2009, a court in Málaga, Spain, convicted Dr. Mena of negligent homicide. He was sentenced to one year in prison and barred from practicing medicine for three years. The court also ordered him to pay €120,000 (about $176,000 at the time) in compensation to Mrs. Obasanjo’s son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo.

The case attracted international attention, not only because it involved a sitting First Lady, but also because it raised broader concerns about medical accountability, patient safety, and the risks associated with elective cosmetic procedures abroad.

More than two decades later, Stella Obasanjo’s death remains one of the most widely discussed cases of medical negligence involving a prominent African public figure outside the continent — a story marked by grief, legal reckoning, and enduring public memory.
