ASABA — Chevron Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, is set to hold a one-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening journalists’ professional skills and promoting ethical standards in oil and gas reporting.
The training, scheduled for Monday, August 24, 2026, will take place at the NUJ Press Centre, Maryam Babangida Way, Asaba, from 11:00 a.m.
With the theme, “Enhancing Professional Skills and Ethical Standards in Oil and Gas Journalism,” the workshop is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the oil and gas industry while promoting accuracy, balance, professionalism and responsible journalism.
Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, described the training as timely, stressing that the strategic importance of the oil and gas sector to Nigeria’s economy makes specialised knowledge essential for journalists covering the industry.
Oyowe said the workshop would equip journalists with a better understanding of the complexities of the sector and enable them to improve the quality and credibility of their reportage.
“This workshop is a timely and strategic intervention to deepen our understanding of the oil and gas industry and strengthen our capacity as journalists. It is important that those reporting such a critical sector have the knowledge and professional competence to provide the public with accurate, balanced and responsible information,” he said.
The NUJ chairman commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for supporting professional development and capacity building among journalists, describing the partnership as an important contribution to strengthening journalism practice in Delta State.
He urged nominated journalists from across the state to take full advantage of the training to broaden their knowledge, sharpen their reporting skills and establish stronger professional relationships with stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.
According to Oyowe, effective reporting of the sector goes beyond gathering and disseminating information, as journalists must also understand the technical, economic, environmental and community dimensions of oil and gas operations.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ Delta State Council to continuous professional development, noting that regular capacity building was essential to strengthening the media’s watchdog and public enlightenment functions.
The workshop is expected to feature training sessions and interactive engagements on key aspects of oil and gas journalism, with emphasis on professional competence, ethical standards, accuracy, balanced reporting and responsible coverage.
The NUJ Delta State Council expressed appreciation to Chevron Nigeria Limited for its partnership and support towards improving the capacity of journalists and promoting professional and ethical journalism in the state.
Oyowe subsequently urged all invited journalists and participants to attend the workshop and maximise the opportunity to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.
