The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the interception of 140 pump-action rifles and cannabis-infused food products with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N373.8 million at the TinCan Island Port in Lagos.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, disclosed that the seizures were made by officers of the TinCan Island Port Command during recent intelligence-driven enforcement operations.
Adeniyi said the operation underscores the service’s commitment to combating the smuggling of prohibited items and preventing dangerous weapons and illicit substances from entering the country through the nation’s seaports.
According to the CGC, the intercepted items included 140 pump-action rifles concealed in a shipment, alongside cannabis-infused snacks disguised as regular food products. He described the seizures as a significant breakthrough in the agency’s ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and protect public safety.
The Customs boss reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering, and collaboration with other security agencies to curb smuggling and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
He also warned importers and their collaborators against attempting to circumvent import regulations, stressing that the Nigeria Customs Service remains vigilant in safeguarding the nation’s borders and facilitating legitimate trade.
