Guinea-Bissau’s deposed President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has arrived in Senegal after being released by the military officers who toppled his government earlier in the week. Senegalese authorities confirmed his arrival on Friday.
According to a statement from Senegal’s foreign ministry, Embaló landed in Dakar late Thursday aboard a chartered military aircraft and is “safe and sound.”
His relocation came after intensive negotiations brokered by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), amid rising tensions in the politically fragile nation.
Guinea-Bissau, which has endured repeated coups and attempted coups since its independence from Portugal in 1974, now faces yet another blow to its already shaky democratic trajectory.
