At least 16 people have been confirmed dead following separate violent attacks in Benue and Kaduna states during Easter celebrations, deepening concerns over persistent insecurity in affected communities.
In Benue State, suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly early morning assault on Agena community in Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area, killing nine residents. The attackers, reportedly numbering over 50, set homes, a local market, and food storage facilities ablaze, leaving widespread destruction in their wake. Several residents are still unaccounted for, while one injured victim is receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately as residents attempted to flee. Local authorities have confirmed the incident, with security operatives deployed to prevent further violence and stabilize the area.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice while strengthening security measures.
In a separate incident in Kaduna State, terrorists attacked two Christian worship centres in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area, during Easter services. The assault targeted First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, resulting in the deaths of at least seven worshippers and the abduction of several others.
Residents noted that poor telecommunications coverage delayed emergency response efforts. However, troops of the Nigerian Army later intervened, engaging the attackers in a gun battle and successfully rescuing 31 abducted worshippers. One of the rescued victims is currently receiving medical care.
Security sources reported that five bodies were recovered at the scene, while evidence along the attackers’ escape routes suggested additional casualties. Military operations have since been intensified to track down the fleeing assailants and reinforce security in the area.
Authorities have assured residents of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property, urging the public to provide credible information to aid ongoing operations.
The coordinated Easter attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in parts of Benue and Kaduna states, despite intensified efforts by security agencies to curb violence.
