Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries in Edo State.
The initiatives, unveiled on Thursday in Benin City, are aimed at improving public transportation, strengthening small businesses and expanding economic opportunities for women, youths and vulnerable groups across the state.
Tinubu, who performed the inauguration and formally launched the empowerment scheme, commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for introducing the initiatives, describing them as evidence of his commitment to the welfare and development of Edo residents.
“I am glad to be in Edo today after quite a long time for the commissioning of 50 compressed natural gas buses for the benefit of the people,” she said.
The First Lady disclosed that the state government would provide ₦200,000 each to 5,000 beneficiaries under the empowerment programme to support their businesses, improve their livelihoods and promote financial independence.
She expressed hope that the beneficiaries would utilise the funds effectively to grow their businesses and improve their economic circumstances.
“I pray that the monies received will prosper in your hands and grow your businesses,” she said.
Earlier, Okpebholo welcomed the First Lady to the state, describing her visit as a demonstration of care, compassion and commitment to the welfare of the people.
According to the governor, the inauguration of the CNG buses and the launch of the empowerment programme address two critical needs of residents: affordable public transportation and economic support for small-business operators.
He said the buses would make transportation more accessible, affordable and efficient, while also providing an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The governor added that the empowerment scheme would strengthen the economic activities of beneficiaries, particularly women and small-business owners.
“When you empower a woman, you strengthen a family, uplift a community and contribute to the prosperity of society,” Okpebholo said.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor said his administration was determined to build an Edo State where good governance, economic opportunities and development would reach every community.
“Our commitment is to build an Edo State where good governance is felt in every home, opportunities are within the reach of every citizen, and no community is left behind,” he added.
