End of an Era: Finland Disconnects Last Landline Network After Nearly 150 Years

Finland has officially brought an end to the era of landline telephones, shutting down its last fixed-line network nearly 150 years after the country’s first telephone connections were introduced.

The historic milestone was marked on Tuesday when Elisa, Finland’s last major telecommunications operator still providing landline services, officially discontinued its fixed-line network. The symbolic final call was made between the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Topi Manner, and Jarkko Saarimäki, Director-General of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency.

The move marks the end of a technology that revolutionized communication for generations before being overtaken by mobile phones and internet-based communication services.

Landline telephones once served as the backbone of personal and business communication across Finland. However, the rapid growth of mobile technology, high-speed internet, and digital communication platforms has led to a steady decline in demand for fixed-line services over the past two decades.

With the shutdown, Finland joins a growing number of countries transitioning entirely to modern digital communication networks as telecommunications providers increasingly focus on mobile and broadband infrastructure.

The closure of the country’s final landline network represents not only the end of a telecommunications service but also the close of a significant chapter in Finland’s technological history, highlighting the rapid evolution of communication from wired telephones to today’s digital age.
