A recent study has suggested that frequent ejaculation may play a role in maintaining healthier sperm, as prolonged periods of sexual abstinence could negatively affect sperm quality.
According to a report by TheCable, the study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B on Monday examined semen data from 115 studies involving nearly 55,000 men. Researchers also reviewed findings from 56 studies covering 30 animal species, including birds, reptiles, bees, and other mammals, to better understand how sperm storage impacts reproductive health.
The analysis revealed that extended abstinence was associated with a decline in sperm quality. Key indicators such as motility—the ability of sperm to swim—and viability—the proportion of living sperm—were found to decrease over time. In addition, researchers observed higher levels of DNA damage in sperm stored for longer periods.
The findings highlight the potential biological costs of prolonged sperm storage and suggest that more frequent ejaculation could help preserve sperm health.
