JOS — Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night foiled an attempted attack on the institution, killing one suspected armed assailant during a gun battle.
The attackers reportedly attempted to breach the Institute’s security perimeter at about 11 p.m. but were repelled by security personnel after a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Dr. Osime Samuel, said the suspected gunmen were forced to retreat following what he described as a swift and coordinated response by security operatives.
According to the statement, one of the attackers was neutralised during the confrontation, while several others escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
“The attackers failed to penetrate the Institute’s security perimeter, and all participants of the Senior Executive Course, staff, residents and facilities remain safe,” the statement said.
NIPSS added that security agencies have intensified efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been strengthened within and around the Institute.
The Institute reassured participants of the Senior Executive Course, members of staff, residents, their families and the general public that the security of lives and property remains its highest priority.
The latest incident comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Plateau State, although authorities said the situation at the Institute remains under control.
